       Furniture Finisher & Spray Painter     

 

 

Job Description:

 

The applicant should be knowledgeable about the variety of paints, varnishes, lacquers and other finishing products available on the market for the woodworking trade, and how to use them. He must also know and have the necessary experience about how to prepare surfaces for painting and how to conduct repairs on surfaces.

The applicant is expected to be familiar and have experience on all aspects of ‘Wood’ finishing and includes how to:-

 

 

 

New Furniture & Joinery

1)   Disassemble items to prepare them for finishing, using hand and power tools.

2)   Remove accessories prior to finishing, and mask areas that should not be exposed to finishing processes.

3)   Fill and smooth cracks or depressions, remove marks and imperfections, and repair broken parts, using plastic or wood knifing putty, wood flour & resin, glue, and other finishing products.

4)   Smooth, shape, and touch-up surfaces to prepare them for finishing, using sandpaper, steel wool, scrapers, and a variety of finishing power sanding tools.

5)   Wash or clean surfaces to be free from dust and other impurities to prepare them for the finish application.

6)   Mix finishing ingredients according to manufacturer’s instructions accurately in order to obtain the desired results.

7)   Spray, brush, or hand-rub finishing ingredients, such as paint, varnish, oil, stain, or wax, onto and into wood grain to finish the work according to the job specifications.


8)   Finish High Gloss painted furniture and joinery after the final coating, by using a hand wet-sanding process with grits of 1200 upwards followed by buffing and polishing to remove ‘orange peel’, specks and paint ripples.


  



Old Furniture & Joinery

1)   Disassemble items to prepare them for finishing, using hand and power tools.

2)    Remove old finishes and damaged or deteriorated parts, using hand tools, stripping tools, sandpaper, steel wool, abrasives, solvents and other related products.

3)    Spray, brush, or hand-rub finishing ingredients, such as paint, varnish, oil, stain, or wax, onto and into wood grain; then apply lacquer or other sealers.

4)    Select appropriate finishing ingredients such as paint, stain, lacquer, shellac, or varnish, depending on factors such as wood hardness and surface type or customer requirements.

5)    Smooth, shape, and touch-up surfaces to prepare them for finishing, using sandpaper, pumice stones, steel wool, scrapers, chisels, a variety of finishing power sanding tools, or grinders.

6)    Wash or clean surfaces to be free from dust and other impurities to prepare them for finish application.

7)    Brush bleaching agents on wood surfaces to restore natural colour.

8)    Distress surfaces with woodworking tools or abrasives before staining to create an antique appearance, or rub surfaces to bring out highlights and shadings.

 

 

 

In addition the applicant:

Would need to be familiar and know which tools and equipment are required for a given job.

Would also be required to monitor and assess his performance on a job by job basis, in order to make improvements and or take corrective action by keeping time sheets and recording the materials and quantities used for each and every job together with the relative remarks.

Must also clean the equipment, the paint-mixing area, and his work area.

We offer a competitive wage based on the average skilled worker wages paid in our trade in Malta.

The job is based on a 40 hour 5 day week. We will not cover any expenses for travel and accommodation in Malta; however we shall assist with locating suitable accommodation. A trial period of two weeks would suffice in knowing whether a person is capable for the job. The normal Maltese Woodworking Employment Regulations would then come into force. Upon request we shall forward a copy of the Conditions of Employment, based on an indefinite period of employment, the Woodworks Wages Council Regulation order updated 01.01.2012.                                                                        

We would also require a Police Conduct Certificate, and after the probationary period, the new employee would be required to provide his own basic hand and power tools. Wages are to be discussed after selection, and rates agreed upon would be confirmed after the initial two week trial.
